Russian Drone Strike on Kyiv Kills 37, Ukrainian Military Depot Explodes

A warehouse containing explosive materials near Kyiv’s western outskirts was struck by a Russian drone, killing at least 37 people.

In the Bucha district of the Kyiv region, the strike was followed by a large fire and several explosions. According to Ukrainian authorities, 42 people were injured, including four children.

More than 370 residents have left the area, while evacuations continued after the attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the facility that was attacked was located in the town of Myla and that a powerful explosion occurred after the initial strike.

Zelensky explained that the facility was a Ukrainian army depot storing shells, drones and other types of ammunition. He acknowledged that the weapons had been stored near homes, in an area that should not have been used for that purpose.

The Ukrainian president said that “ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas” and announced that criminal proceedings had been opened over official negligence.

Taras Didych, the head of the Dmytrivka community, was among the victims. According to Zelensky, he was killed while trying to save others.

Prosecutors in Ukraine have opened investigations to determine whether the explosive materials and devices were stored in that area in compliance with regulations.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi described the incident as a grave tragedy and criticized the failure to learn from previous mistakes.

In July, another ammunition depot in Vyshneve, near Kyiv, caught fire following an attack, leaving 22 people dead. The investigation into that incident uncovered serious violations of requirements governing the distance that must separate military facilities from residential areas.

“It is criminal negligence to repeat the same mistakes in the fifth year of the full-scale invasion,” Koretskyi said, calling for everyone responsible to be punished.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the strike but gave a different description of the target. Moscow claimed it had attacked a warehouse in Myla where components and launch boosters for long-range drones were stored.

Russia also announced that it had struck ports in Mykolaiv and Izmail, as well as a logistics center and storage facilities in the Kyiv region where, according to Moscow, parts for Ukrainian “Flamingo” missiles were being kept.

At the same time, local authorities reported that other Russian attacks in the southern Kherson region killed two people and injured 27, including a child.
