Romeo and Juliet” celebrates its 30th anniversary, the film that brought young people closer to Shakespeare

It has been 30 years since the release of “Romeo and Juliet,” directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the leading roles.

Although it is based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy, the work was adapted to the urban reality of the 1990s, making the classic love story more accessible to younger generations and increasing interest in the English playwright.

For English teachers, the film became an important tool for bringing students closer to Shakespeare’s work, which was often seen as difficult to understand. Meanwhile, the performances of Romeo and Juliet helped boost the fame of the two young actors, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

Baz Luhrmann took an unusual approach, moving the story away from medieval Verona and setting it in a contemporary world. The rival families were portrayed as criminal gangs fighting for territory and controlling economic activities.

Shakespeare’s verse was preserved in the film version, but it was accompanied by modern elements, including violence, car chases and street clashes. In the opening scenes, the audience learns the couple’s story through a television news broadcast that foreshadows the lovers’ tragic ending.

This approach was connected to the 1990s’ strong interest in the criminal world, which was present both in films of the time and in hip-hop music. The riots and car chases also evoked the media attention surrounding the pursuit of O.J. Simpson in 1994.

The tragedy, written in the 16th century, tells the story of the relationship between two young people who fall in love despite the deep hostility between their families. Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation continues to be considered one of the versions that brought this classic work closer to younger audiences.
