Regional elections in Germany increase pressure on Friedrich Merz; a poor CDU result could spark debate over the chancellor’s future

On Sunday, voters in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will head to the polls for elections that could increase political pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his party, the CDU.

In Berlin, polling data points to a close contest. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, meanwhile, the CDU faces the risk of a very poor performance. The AfD is seeking to further strengthen its rise after securing a decisive victory in Saxony-Anhalt two weeks ago.

Economic problems, energy prices and debates over immigration are among the reasons for dissatisfaction with the chancellor. So far, no one within the CDU has openly challenged Merz, but poor results in regional elections have prompted debate about his political prospects.

Merz has made clear that he will continue in his role, while the government, according to him, will focus its attention on reforms in the economy, the tax system and the social sector.

After the voting process concludes, CDU leaders are expected to meet in Berlin to review the results.
