Ramush Haradinaj open to candidacy for head of state, if opposition proposes

Former leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj, has stated that he would not refuse a possible candidacy for the post of president. He clarified that he would consider such an engagement only with the support of the opposition spectrum.

During a statement to the media, Haradinaj pointed out that he is not self-promoting for this role, but would respond positively to an invitation from the opposition. “I have never before asked to be president. If the opposition forces deem that my name is suitable to enter the race, then I would welcome the proposal,” he said, drawing a clear line with the Vetëvendosje Movement, with which he ruled out any kind of agreement.

Haradinaj harshly criticized Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s approach, accusing him of attempting to impose the election of the president. He cited as an example the case of the previous candidate, Feride Rushiti, describing it as a pure dictate: “The selection of the president cannot be done with ultimatums like ‘either her, or elections’. This shows a lack of will for inter-institutional cooperation.”

Furthermore, the former AAK leader stressed the importance of respecting democratic principles in this process. He argued that a functioning democracy requires the presence of at least two candidates, one from the majority and the other from the opposition. According to him, Prime Minister Kurti is acting as if he has won the exclusive right to decide the fate of the country, ignoring dialogue with other political forces. “He cannot decide everything alone in Kosovo; he must also accept voices outside his camp,” Haradinaj concluded.
