Haradinaj Ready to Run, Analyst Explains Obstacles to Presidency

The Vetëvendosje Movement, which emerged victorious in the June 7 elections, has yet to reach common ground with the opposition parties on the issue of the president. Meanwhile, a name has emerged from the opposition ranks who has expressed readiness to enter the race.

Former Alliance for the Future of Kosovo leader Ramush Haradinaj has said he would accept a nomination for president of the Republic of Kosovo if the opposition were to put him forward.

Haradinaj clarified that he is not putting himself forward for the position but would be willing to run if the opposition parties considered him the right choice. He stressed that he does not intend to be part of an agreement with Vetëvendosje and that he has not previously been a presidential candidate.

According to him, communication between the governing parties and the opposition is necessary to elect the head of state. The former AAK leader opposed the possibility of Vetëvendosje imposing its candidate, referring to the case of Feride Rushiti and the stance of “either her or elections.”

Haradinaj also said that a democratic process should include one nomination from the governing parties and one from the opposition. He said Albin Kurti did not receive all the votes needed to decide every issue in Kosovo on his own, while accusing him of failing to cooperate with the opposition on the presidency and seeking a vote only for the candidate he wants.

Political analyst Lirim Gashi spoke to “Bota sot” about Haradinaj’s willingness to accept the nomination if proposed by the opposition.

Gashi has no doubt that Haradinaj would accept such a proposal, but believes that his personal willingness alone is not enough. According to the analyst, the president must be a figure who builds bridges of cooperation and enjoys broad political and public trust, and it is precisely in these respects that Haradinaj’s candidacy could encounter serious difficulties.

The analyst believes that the opposition could, at least theoretically, put forward a joint candidate. However, he does not believe that Ramush Haradinaj is the most broadly acceptable choice for the position.

According to Gashi, Haradinaj is among the most prominent but also the most polarizing figures in Kosovo politics. He stresses that a consensus candidate for president must also secure support beyond the bloc nominating them, something Haradinaj would find difficult to achieve.

Gashi predicts that the former AAK leader’s candidacy would face the same challenges, and perhaps even greater ones. He explains that this is not related to Haradinaj’s historical contribution, which he considers an important part of Kosovo’s history, but rather to the requirement that the president be perceived as a figure above party interests.

In the analyst’s assessment, Haradinaj’s many years of involvement in fierce political clashes make it difficult for him to be perceived as a unifying figure. Gashi concludes that electing the president requires votes from outside the opposition as well, while there are currently no indications that Haradinaj could secure such a majority.
