Poliçan protests again against the municipality merger, 15 Municipal Council members resign

Residents of Poliçan continued their protest against the municipality merger, this time with an important political decision. At the rally, the 15 members of the Municipal Council announced their unanimous resignation.

According to statements made, the successor list of councilors has taken the same position. The gathering was held on the day the “Besa” program was launched, while residents expressed their disappointment over the absence of MPs in Poliçan.

The citizens said they had expected political representatives to be present to hear the community’s concerns, but according to them, not a single MP attended the meeting.

Residents oppose the plan to reorganize local government units, describing it as a rushed process whose consequences, they say, will be felt for a long time.

Mimoza Kula, chairwoman of the Municipal Council, said the reform threatens jobs and could lead to a weakening of the services provided to citizens.

“We oppose a reform that could also lead to the loss of jobs for many professionals and employees in administrations, services and other fields, because behind every job there is a family, behind every service there is a citizen, and behind every family that leaves there is another step toward the depopulation of the city and the territory,” Kula said.

She explained that the residents’ position is not simply about preserving the municipality building, but about the institution’s survival and guaranteeing services for the community.

“We are not defending the building, but the institution. After holding meetings in the administrative units of Vërtop, Tërpan and Poliçan, the Municipal Council unanimously decided to oppose the dissolution of the Municipality of Poliçan,” Kula said.

The chairwoman of the Municipal Council warned that the protests would continue if the reform was not halted.

“We will not accept our city being dissolved. If you dissolve the Municipality of Poliçan, we will continue the protests,” she declared.

Kula also addressed the absence of MPs during the meetings with the residents of Poliçan.

“Today was the day when MPs were supposed to meet and listen to the residents, but no MP came to Poliçan; they went only to three municipalities in the county,” she said.

At the end, Mimoza Kula invited other municipalities that could be affected by the reform to join Poliçan’s protest, which will move in front of Parliament.

“Do not carry out this reform, which failed from the very beginning. We call on all municipalities at risk to join our protest, which will continue in front of Parliament. Besa is our vote, Mr. Prime Minister; we gave you our word, but you did not keep your word to us,” Kula concluded.
