PHOTOS/ 7.4-magnitude earthquake hits Colombia, 110 victims and people still trapped under the rubble

At least 111 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck western Colombia, while rescue teams continue searching for people believed to be trapped in collapsed buildings.

The 7.4-magnitude tremors caused considerable damage in several areas of the country, particularly to various buildings where people are reportedly still under the rubble.

Dozens of buildings have collapsed in the city of Cali, while authorities have announced that people may still be trapped inside. The information was confirmed by Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder, according to Reuters.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) determined that the earthquake’s epicenter was near San José del Palmar, in the Chocó region. The earthquake was felt across a wide area, including the cities of Cali and Medellín.

Reports of injuries and severe material damage have also come from the cities of Quibdó and Pereira.

Following the earthquake, emergency teams launched a major search-and-rescue operation to find people who may be trapped under the rubble.

The damaged structures also include Manizales Cathedral.
