Hope Amid Tragedy in Colombia as 6-Month-Old Baby Rescued Alive from Rubble

A six-month-old baby was rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Cali, Colombia, following the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Monday morning, August 10. It was one of the most emotional moments amid the tragic aftermath of the tremors.

During searches at one of the buildings that collapsed in Cali, rescue teams discovered signs of life beneath the debris. After intervening, they managed to pull the baby out alive.

Her mother was also at the same site and, according to reports, had tried to protect the child at the moment the building collapsed.

Videos of the rescue operation spread rapidly on social media, bringing a ray of hope amid images of the destruction left by the earthquake.

However, the situation in Cali remains dramatic, as several buildings have suffered severe damage. Among the most serious cases is the city’s University Hospital, where parts of several upper floors collapsed and the damage also affected the Pediatrics ward.

The hospital’s director, Irne Torres Castro, said the earthquake had damaged around 30% of the institution’s infrastructure. Three floors were affected, housing the Pediatrics ward, Internal Medicine and part of the Neonatal Unit.

At least four people have been rescued from the rubble. Meanwhile, other patients have been evacuated from the building and taken to other hospitals for treatment.

Approximately 600 people were forced to leave the hospital and receive treatment outside it. Emergency teams are continuing to search for people who may still be trapped under the rubble.

The governor of Valle del Cauca, Dilian Francisca Toro, confirmed that people remain beneath the rubble. Firefighters and soldiers have joined the operation, while rescue teams are racing against time to pull out survivors.

The chaos caused by the earthquake is also reflected in images shared on social media. Patients can be seen being carried on stretchers outside the hospital, while doctors and nurses have gathered in the building’s courtyard.

In one of the most distressing scenes, nurses were forced to care for newborns in the street after the damage caused by the tremors affected the pediatrics and neonatology wards.

The powerful earthquake has left extensive damage in several areas of Colombia. Operations to locate and rescue people who may remain trapped under the rubble are still ongoing.
