North Macedonia celebrates 35 years since becoming an independent state

On September 8, 1991, the people of Macedonia took part in a historic referendum, in which an absolute majority voted “yes” to their homeland’s independence. This powerful democratic act laid the foundation for the birth of an autonomous nation.

That referendum represented a decisive moment that paved the way for the establishment of the new state, including the creation of state institutions, an international embassy network, defense forces and an independent economic strategy.

Thirty-five years later, the landscape reveals a long path marked by deep political crises, security risks, painful negotiations and an ongoing effort to achieve global recognition.

The journey began with a bloodless secession and admission to the United Nations, continued with the armed conflict of 2001 and the Prespa Agreement, and culminated in integration into the North Atlantic Alliance. This transition makes North Macedonia’s story one of the most intriguing in the Balkans.

Various activities have been scheduled throughout today to celebrate this 35th anniversary of national independence.
