Nimoni takes part in roundtable on preventing torture through the protection of mental health in correctional institutions

Acting Deputy Minister of Justice Genc Nimoni took part in a roundtable discussion on the topic “Preventing torture through the protection of mental health in correctional institutions,” organized by the Kosovo Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Survivors to mark June 26 – the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

In his opening remarks, Nimoni underlined that this day is a constant reminder of the obligation to protect human dignity, prohibit every form of inhuman and degrading treatment, and ensure respect for the fundamental rights of every person deprived of liberty in Kosovo.

He said that in recent years important steps have been taken to strengthen the system through the establishment of joint mechanisms between the Kosovo Correctional Service and the Prison Health Department, while implementing the highest standards of the Council of Europe.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Nimoni announced that the Council of Europe’s two-year project on the treatment of persons with mental health disorders is nearing completion, while the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, at the request of the Ministry of Justice, has allocated a budget to expand the capacities of the Institute of Forensic Psychiatry, a project expected to be completed in the coming months.

He also mentioned the establishment, with the support of the Ministry of Justice, of the Institution for the Treatment of Persons with Special Needs, which operates as a separate ward within the Dubrava Correctional Centre.

In conclusion, Deputy Minister Nimoni reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Justice to advancing human rights standards and guaranteeing dignified treatment for persons deprived of liberty.
