New US ambassador begins diplomatic mission in Albania, Eric Wendt meets with President Bajram Begaj

After a period of nearly three years without a confirmed ambassador, the United States Embassy in Tirana will once again have its official head.

Eric Wendt begins his diplomatic mission in Albania this Saturday, succeeding Yuri Kim, who left the post in June 2023.

The new US ambassador will be received today at an official meeting by the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, to whom he will present his credentials. After the ceremony, Begaj and Wendt are also expected to hold a one-on-one meeting.

Nominated by US President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate on August 6, Eric Wendt arrives in Tirana with a long career in the military and national security fields.

Wendt has more than 34 years of service in the US military, where he held leadership positions in the “Green Berets” Special Forces. During his military-diplomatic career, he also led NATO’s Special Operations Command.

During his hearing before the US Senate on May 20, Wendt also presented his priorities for the mission in Albania. He stressed the importance of the rule of law and the fight against corruption, organized crime and drug trafficking.

Strengthening cooperation between Albania and the United States in the fields of defense and cybersecurity will also be a focus of his mandate.

Regarding judicial reform, Wendt expressed support for SPAK, praising the institution’s cooperation with US law enforcement agencies.

“SPAK’s work remains crucial as long as the institution maintains its independence and stays away from political influence,” Wendt said during his Senate hearing.
