Eric P. Wendt has received approval from the United States Senate to serve as U.S. ambassador to Albania, bringing him closer to his official appointment in Tirana.

During the plenary session, his nomination received 50 votes in favor and 44 against. Wendt had previously also secured the support of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Completion of the process now requires the signature of U.S. President Donald Trump, the final step in formally appointing him as United States ambassador to Albania.
Once all procedures have been completed, Wendt is expected to arrive in Tirana. He will officially assume his duties after presenting his credentials to the President of the Republic of Albania.
Eric Wendt will succeed Yuri Kim in the post. Her term as ambassador to Albania ended in 2023. Since then, the U.S. Embassy in Tirana has been led by chargés d’affaires, while the appointment of a new ambassador was delayed due to the Senate confirmation process.
Who is Eric P. Wendt?
Wendt is a former senior U.S. Army officer with more than three decades of military service. He spent most of his career with the U.S. Army Special Forces, known as the “Green Berets.”
His assignments have included leading NATO’s Special Operations Command. He has also held key security positions in the Middle East and the Pacific region.
From 2017 to 2019, Wendt served as the U.S. security coordinator for the Israeli-Palestinian Authority. During his career, he also served as chief of staff at the United States Pacific Command.
He graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed postgraduate studies in national security at the Naval Postgraduate School. Wendt speaks several foreign languages, including Arabic and Korean.
This is not the first time he has been nominated for an ambassadorial post. During Donald Trump’s first term, Wendt was nominated as ambassador to Qatar, but the U.S. Senate did not finalize his nomination.
