Meloni surpasses Berlusconi as her government marks the longest term in Italy’s history: Stability is not measured by records

The government led by Giorgia Meloni has entered the annals of the Italian Republic, becoming the longest-serving cabinet since its founding.

With 1,413 days in office, the current administration has surpassed the previous record, held by Silvio Berlusconi’s second government, by just one day.

In a post on social media, Meloni reflected on the achievement, emphasizing her gratitude and the weight of the commitment to continue moving forward.

“As of today, our government holds the title of the longest-serving in the entire history of the Italian Republic. I welcome this fact with profound gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility,” she wrote.

The prime minister stressed that the length of a term in office should not be misconstrued as a personal trophy.

“Stability is not something to boast about, but rather the prerequisite that gives a country the ability to plan, make decisions, honor commitments and earn respect,” Meloni argued.

After making history in 2022 as the first woman to lead the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni has now added another record: heading the republic’s most enduring administration.

Her cabinet took office on October 22, 2022, and has now completed exactly 1,413 days leading the country.

The previous record belonged to Silvio Berlusconi, whose second government remained in office from June 11, 2001, to April 23, 2005, for a total of 1,412 days.

In her remarks, the Italian leader also praised the work carried out by her team in recent years.

“In recent years, we have devoted ourselves to increasing employment, reducing unemployment, supporting families and businesses, strengthening security, responsibly managing public finances, and restoring Italy’s influence and credibility on the international stage,” she said.

“The results are clear, but we are fully aware of how much work still lies ahead,” Meloni added.

In her message, the prime minister also made a clear reference to the next electoral cycle, expected in the spring of 2027.

“Next year, we will once again go before the citizens with a record of our achievements, the unresolved challenges and our vision for the future. And they will once again decide whether we deserve to continue along this path,” Meloni concluded.
