Meloni breaks Berlusconi’s historic record as her government becomes Italy’s longest-serving

The government led by Giorgia Meloni has reached a historic milestone in Italy, becoming the longest-serving government since the establishment of the Italian Republic.

After 1,413 days in office, her cabinet has surpassed the previous record, held by Silvio Berlusconi’s second administration, by a single day.

In a social media post, Meloni welcomed the achievement with gratitude, but also with a profound sense of responsibility as her term continues.

“Today, our government becomes the longest-serving government in the history of the Italian Republic. I welcome this with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility.”

According to the Italian prime minister, the fact that a government remains in power for a long time should not simply be reduced to a political statistic.

“Stability is not a record to boast about, but the condition that allows a nation to plan, make decisions, honor its commitments and command respect,” she emphasized.

Giorgia Meloni, who made history in 2022 as the first woman to head the Italian government, now also holds the record for the longest-serving administration in the history of the Republic.

Her government was sworn in on October 22, 2022, and has now served a total of 1,413 days in office.

Until now, the record belonged to Silvio Berlusconi, whose second government remained in power from June 11, 2001, to April 23, 2005, totaling 1,412 days.

The Italian prime minister also highlighted her government’s achievements over the past few years.

“In recent years, we have worked to increase employment, reduce unemployment, support families and businesses, strengthen security, manage public finances responsibly, and restore Italy’s influence and credibility on the international stage,” Meloni said.

“The results are there, but we know very well how much still remains to be done,” she added.

In her remarks, the head of the Italian government also referred to the next electoral cycle, which is expected to take place in the spring of 2027.

“Next year, we will go back to the citizens with what we have done, what remains to be done and our vision for the future. And they will decide once again whether we deserve to continue on this path,” Meloni concluded.
