Major explosion at Qatar’s largest gas plant, 13 dead and dozens injured

A powerful explosion at the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, while 66 others were injured.

The incident was recorded on Sunday evening in the Ras Laffan industrial area, located about 70 kilometers north of Doha.

Qatar’s Interior Ministry announced that the cause of the explosion was a “technical accident” at the Barzan gas supply facility. After the incident, flames and thick smoke turned the horizon orange, while the force of the blast was felt as far as central Doha, spreading panic among residents.

According to Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, there is no sign to suggest sabotage or a deliberate attack, so the case is being treated as an industrial accident. He also stressed that gas exports will not be affected, although work at the plant has been halted until the investigation is concluded.

Meanwhile, authorities have opened an investigation to determine the causes of the explosion. The minister said that all the victims are citizens of India and Pakistan. On the other hand, the Indian embassy in Doha said it is maintaining constant contact with Qatari authorities and is providing support to the families of those affected.

QatarEnergy, the state-owned company, confirmed that emergency teams responded immediately and managed to bring the flames under control.

The explosion occurred at a time when operations at the plant were resuming, after having been suspended since December 2025 due to urgent maintenance work.
