Madonna’s birthday party in Corfu sparks political debate in Greece / Akrita: We are not a plantation; Georgiadis: Free advertising worth millions of euros

Madonna’s birthday party in Corfu and her stay in Greece attracted more than just the attention of the celebrity media, becoming the subject of a fierce political clash between SYRIZA MP Elena Akrita and Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis.

The debate began following reports in the Greek media that residents of the village of Kouramades, in Corfu, had been asked to keep the windows of their homes closed when the American artist arrived, in order to guarantee her privacy. The newspaper “Proto Thema” reported that Madonna entered the village accompanied by an escort and in black vehicles, while two roads were blocked ahead of her arrival.

One resident told the Greek media that citizens had been instructed not to open their windows and that police forces were also present in the area. These reports prompted Elena Akrita’s response.

“If this is true, the issue is not whether Madonna asked for it. The issue is whether the residents complied,” the MP wrote on Facebook.

Akrita then hardened her position, declaring that Greece “is not a plantation in the South where we bend down to pick cotton so that we do not spoil the lady’s birthday.”

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis responded immediately, accusing the MP of failing to understand the value to Greece’s tourism industry of a visit by one of the world’s most famous figures.

Georgiadis said that Madonna’s stay in the country, along with her photographs and social media posts, had provided Greece with “free advertising worth millions of euros.”

According to the minister, promotion of this scale on the international stage brings direct benefits to the tourism sector and its thousands of workers. He criticized Akrita for having “found yet another reason to complain and to view everything pessimistically.”

The exchanges between the two Greek politicians continued throughout Saturday and also took on a personal tone. In this way, Madonna’s birthday opened a broader discussion about tourism, the privileged treatment of celebrities, and the line between promoting a country and respecting residents’ rights.

Madonna celebrated her 68th birthday on August 16 in Kouramades, Corfu, in the company of her partner Akeem Morris, her children and her friends. For the celebration, she chose a traditional restaurant, where local dishes were served, Greek music was played and plates were also smashed.

After the celebrations, the singer shared photographs and videos from her holiday in Greece on social media, presenting Corfu to the millions of followers she has around the world.
