Driver who fatally ran over a dog and fled arrested in Corfu

A serious incident in Corfu has sparked widespread outrage among residents and animal protection groups.

Police have arrested the driver of a vehicle who is suspected of running over a dog lying in the road and then fleeing the scene. The incident occurred in the area of Avliotes, in the northern part of the island.

The episode took place in the early hours of Saturday, August 22, and was captured by a security camera. The footage shows a white car approaching the dog lying on the asphalt. The driver initially appears to slow down, but the vehicle then runs over the animal and leaves the scene.

The animal was left seriously injured in the road and died moments later.

Investigations to establish the driver’s identity began after the video was shared, as well as following numerous reports from citizens and animal protection organizations.

Authorities managed to identify the woman and subsequently arrested her. According to information about the case, she is expected to appear before a prosecutor.

The case has caused widespread outrage in Corfu, and the Panhellenic Group Against Animal Abuse has also been informed.

Greek law provides for criminal and administrative penalties for killing or mistreating animals. Authorities are continuing to verify the full circumstances of the incident and the driver’s responsibility.
