Limaj: Trendafilova’s statement shows the first impact of the new law on the Specialist Chambers

Fatmir Limaj, chairman of NISMA, described as a positive development the statement by Ekaterina Trendafilova, president of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, following the approval of the new law by the Assembly of Kosovo.

During an interview on the “FIVE” program on Dukagjini, Limaj said her reaction was linked to the concrete actions undertaken by Kosovo. According to him, the fact that Trendafilova appeared publicly to provide explanations is the first indication that the law has begun to take effect.

He said that the president of the Specialist Chambers had not directly commented on the content of the new law, but had focused on the legal basis on which the institution operates.

Limaj stressed that Trendafilova does not have the authority to comment on or interpret laws adopted by the Assembly of Kosovo. He said that in her statement she had been cautious, precisely because of these limitations.

“First, I believe that this reaction comes as a result of Kosovo’s concrete actions and the law. They should not have had such a reaction, as they have not had one in the past six years. The first effects and signs of the law’s impact are Ms. Trendafilova’s obligation to come out and provide this explanation and statement, and this is the first sign of the law’s effect,” Limaj said.

He added that Trendafilova had not commented on the adopted law, but had explained the legal basis on which the Specialist Chambers operate. According to Limaj, she knows that she has no right to interpret Kosovo’s laws and the acts issued by the Assembly.

“For me, the fact that she was compelled to come out and provide some explanations is itself a positive step. Regardless of what she said, it shows the law’s first effects, because for years now they have been accompanied by arrogance, a lack of communication and a lack of transparency, as you also know. They have found it necessary to speak in offices rather than address the citizens of Kosovo, in whose name they judge and work,” the NISMA leader declared.
