Kosovo’s acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, said on Friday that political parties should begin discussing specific potential candidates for the country’s next president. According to him, an agreement on the issue would make it possible to avoid new elections.
Kurti said that too much time had been lost and that discussions should now also focus on names, stressing that the greatest loss would come from holding elections.
According to him, the next president should be a “consensus” and inclusive figure, with the broadest possible support both in the Assembly and among citizens.
He said that last night he had sent messages to the leaders of PDK, LDK and the Alliance, proposing a meeting to discuss the presidency.
Kurti said the aim was for the parties to reach an agreement on the issue in advance so that elections could be avoided.
He also said Kosovo had “dozens” of prominent figures who could be considered for the post of president. Among them, Kurti mentioned figures from academic, political and social life, as well as people who contributed to the war and the state-building process.

Albin Kurti, the leader of LVV and acting prime minister, reacted after LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku said a day earlier that his party would not continue negotiations on forming a governing coalition with LVV.
Kurti said that, in his view, LDK should have joined the governing coalition and a political agreement should have been reached. He explained that the division of responsibilities did not necessarily have to reflect the election result of 53 to 18 identically, but added that a distortion of that result could not be accepted either.
According to Kurti, giving the post of Assembly speaker to a party with 18 MPs was not an insignificant offer. He said that after it became clear that LDK was not interested in the position, LVV repeated the offer it had first made in the spring.
The offer stipulated that if VV proposed Glauk Konjufca as its presidential candidate, LDK would receive the post of deputy prime minister and four ministries. If the presidential candidate were a consensus figure, LDK would receive the post of deputy prime minister and three ministries, as LVV would relinquish its claim to the presidency.
Kurti stressed that it would be no small matter for LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku to become his deputy in the government. According to him, it would remain a significant offer even if the election result had been closer.
He also said that, following Abdixhiku’s idea, he had written to all three party leaders to meet as soon as possible and reach an agreement on the presidency. Kurti added that the discussions should now also include specific names.
