Kurti Expresses Readiness to Cooperate with LDK, but Agreement Remains Elusive

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti confirmed that the Vetëvendosje Movement remains willing and interested in cooperating with the Democratic League of Kosovo, stressing the need for the country to move forward more quickly.

However, he said that there is still no political agreement with the LDK. His statement came after an approximately three-hour meeting on Tuesday evening with the party’s leader, Lumir Abdixhiku.

Speaking after the talks, Kurti said that reaching an agreement would be the main news. He explained that the parties had discussed various options and approaches to cooperation, but had not yet reached a political agreement.

According to him, an agreement that takes into account the will expressed in the elections is needed. “We need a political agreement that respects the election result. Its purpose should not be to replace that result, but to turn it into a contribution to institutional stability,” Kurti said.

He stressed that new elections are not desirable for either party. Nevertheless, Kurti warned that the country could head toward elections if no agreement is reached and no progress is made.

“No one wants new elections. But despite this, in the absence of an agreement and steps forward, circumstances that lead to elections could unfortunately arise,” he said.

Speaking about the issue of the president, Kurti reiterated that the position of head of state should not be included in political horse-trading. According to him, the office should embody the representation and unity of the Republic.

“The position of president should not be treated as part of political power, but as an office that represents the Republic. It remains to be seen what the next round of communication will bring. The specific nominee must have broad consensus and be inclusive,” Kurti said.
