Kurti calls for agreement on president: New elections would not resolve the deadlock

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti called on political parties to reach a new agreement on electing the president. He said the Constitutional Court’s ruling had made action urgent.

The Constitutional Court has determined that the 60-day deadline for electing the president expires on October 6, 2026. At a government meeting, Kurti said six full days remained to reach an agreement and give the country a new president.

Speaking about the previous agreement with the LDK, he said it had been approved by the party leadership but violated and abandoned by six of its lawmakers. Kurti invited the parties to sit down together again, arguing that a new agreement was possible and that new elections and their serious consequences could therefore be avoided.

He warned that if a president was not elected, the country would hold new elections. Those elections, however, would not be for president: Kosovo would again be left without a parliament and, this time, would also face uncertainty over who would carry out the president’s duties, while the government would remain in office.

According to Kurti, holding elections again only to return to the same point would not serve the country, which now needs institutional stability more than ever.
