Kurti after meeting with Valentina Superti: The EU must respond to Kosovo with readiness for membership

Kosovo’s acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, held a meeting with Valentina Superti, the European Union’s Director for Enlargement and Neighbourhood for the Western Balkans, who is visiting the Republic of Kosovo for the first time.

In a reaction published on Facebook, Kurti said that Kosovo is a “regional leader in the rule of law, the fight against corruption, political rights, civil liberties, as well as in the indexes of elections and liberal democracies.” He also stressed that the country has made progress in European reforms, is fully “aligned with the foreign and security policy of the European Union,” and has also “recorded continuous economic growth.”

According to him, for the first time in 15 years, Kosovo has been removed from the lists of fragile and conflict-affected countries by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

“The European Union is a major contributor to the development of our Republic, while membership is Kosovo’s goal and future. The EU must respond to the will of our people for membership with a mutual willingness to accept us. Candidate country status and the opening of negotiations are the starting point of a process through which Kosovo strengthens its democracy and develops even further,” Kurti wrote.

He said that the meeting also addressed topics related to the “Growth Plan, integration into the ‘Roam Like at Home’ zone, the Berlin Process, regional cooperation and equal representation, as well as infrastructure, trade, digitalisation and education.”
