Kurti and Abdixhiku Describe Three-Hour Meeting as Positive, but No Political Agreement Reached

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Democratic League of Kosovo leader Lumir Abdixhiku held a meeting on Tuesday that lasted around three hours as part of efforts to reach a political agreement.

Both sides described the talks as constructive and productive, but they did not result in an agreement. Meanwhile, the constitutive session of the Kosovo Assembly is scheduled to be held on Thursday at 10:00.

After the meeting, Kurti and Abdixhiku outlined their positions on the issues discussed and the possibilities for overcoming the institutional situation.

Kurti, who also leads the Vetëvendosje Movement, said his discussion with Abdixhiku had taken place in a constructive spirit, although it had not produced a political agreement with the LDK.

According to him, the meeting addressed current political developments, the institutional situation and future challenges. He said the two sides share many concerns, but also have the will and readiness to cooperate in the future.

The acting prime minister emphasized that communication and meetings between political parties should be regarded as a normal part of political life. According to him, they should be used to find solutions even when the parties have differences.

However, Kurti made it clear that there is still no agreement with the LDK. He said the news would be the achievement of an agreement, while so far only different approaches and the options available to the parties have been considered.

Kurti said a political agreement is needed that respects the election result and translates it into institutional stability. Otherwise, according to him, Kosovo could head toward new elections, although this is not the desired scenario.

The issue of electing Kosovo’s president was also raised during the talks with the LDK, but Kurti said no specific names were mentioned. He said the aim is to find an inclusive candidate who is above party disputes and enjoys broad support in the Assembly.

Speaking about contacts with other political parties, Kurti criticized AAK leader Ardian Gjini. He said he had expressed his willingness to meet with him, but that no such meeting had taken place.

Kurti also said he remains willing to meet with PDK leader Bedri Hamza to discuss ways of overcoming the political situation.

For his part, Abdixhiku said the LDK is not seeking the post of Assembly speaker. According to him, it is a ceremonial position that, in accordance with the Constitution, should be filled upon the nomination of the leading party.

The LDK leader said that if no agreement is reached by August 6, the process of constituting the Assembly should proceed. He added that there is an additional deadline for other issues, but stressed that the sooner a solution is found, the better.

Abdixhiku described the meeting with Kurti as good and productive, while confirming that the LDK is ready for talks to continue in the coming days.

He said the LDK participated in good faith in the second meeting since the June 7 elections, respecting the election result and seeking to avoid new elections.

According to Abdixhiku, such an approach protects both the interests of the LDK and those of the state. He said the meeting covered programmatic and political differences, as well as strategic prospects for the future. The LDK leader said efforts would be made to ensure that discussions become more substantive in the coming days.

Abdixhiku reiterated that his party would not depart from the principles it has presented publicly. He called for a comprehensive agreement that would preserve the institutional balance and ensure democratic equilibrium within the institutions.

According to him, the LDK must feel represented within these arrangements. Otherwise, Abdixhiku said, the political constellation would lack the necessary strength.

Finally, he warned that a lack of action and failure to reach a political agreement would lead the country toward new elections, which he described as the only guaranteed scenario if nothing is done.
