Iran calls for acceptance of the “new order” in the Strait of Hormuz as Pete Hegseth cancels Israel visit

Relations between the United States and Iran remain tense, while the situation in the Middle East continues to be volatile.

Tehran has called for recognition of what Iranian authorities describe as the “new Iranian order” in the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has canceled his planned trip to Israel.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has accused the United States of violating the ceasefire in several ways, including what he described as “violations of the new Iranian rules” in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, senior Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi said there is “no alternative” but to accept the “new Iranian order” in this strategically important maritime passage, through which a significant share of the global oil trade passes.

Security in the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most contentious issues in talks between Washington and Tehran. The United States and Iran hold different positions regarding control and navigation rules in the area.

Under the memorandum of understanding reached on June 17, Iran had undertaken to ensure the passage of commercial vessels for 60 days without additional fees. However, Iranian authorities have required every vessel to coordinate its passage with Tehran and have warned that using maritime corridors designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) without Iran’s approval is “unacceptable and entirely dangerous.”

In a parallel development, the BBC reported that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has canceled the visit he had been expected to make to Israel.

Hegseth was in Turkey for the NATO summit together with President Donald Trump, while the trip to Israel had not been officially confirmed by either side.

According to international media, the meeting was expected to address Israel’s concern over the possibility of a sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier said that such an agreement would be a mistake.

So far, neither Washington nor Tel Aviv has offered an official explanation for the reason behind the cancellation of the visit.
