Investigation into the murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja concluded, prosecution communicates charge to Elvis Shkambi

The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office today communicated to Elvis Shkambi the charge of “murder of public officials because of their duty.” The charge was communicated as part of the investigation into the murder of appellate judge Astrit Kalaja.

Top Channel journalist Anila Hoxha reports that the conclusion of the investigation into the incident was communicated today to Shkambi, who is being held in pre-trial detention. Meanwhile, the charge against Elvis Shkambi’s uncle, Gjon Shkambi, will be communicated on Monday.

Elvis Shkambi also faces the charge of “murder under qualifying circumstances,” attempted, in connection with the wounding of two people, father and son, who were the opposing party in the court proceedings. Earlier, Gjon Shkambi stated that he had no knowledge of his nephew’s plans and did not know that Elvis would take such action.

How did the serious incident happen?

The incident occurred after the conclusion of a court hearing concerning a property dispute in Shkodër, which was being reviewed by the Tirana Court of Appeal. It is reported that Judge Astrit Kalaja had ruled against the party represented by Elvis and Gjon Shkambi. Immediately after the verdict was announced, Elvis Shkambi drew a weapon and fired three shots at the judge, hitting him in the chest and killing him instantly. During the same incident, father and son Rakip and Ervis Kurtaj, the other party in the proceedings, were also wounded. They are currently at the Trauma Hospital and are out of danger.
