The case stems from a scandal at Harvard Medical School, where relatives of the victims accused the university of gross negligence and the abusive treatment of donated bodies.

The scandal came to light following the discovery of the activities of Cedric Lodge, the former director of Harvard’s morgue. Using his position in the Anatomical Gift Program, Lodge removed organs from bodies donated for education and scientific research between 2018 and 2021 and then sold them online on the black market.

Lodge and six other people who did not work at the university were involved in the affair. Lodge was sentenced to eight years in prison, while his wife received a sentence of one year and one day in prison. The other people involved pleaded guilty in 2025.

Although the families’ civil lawsuits against Harvard were initially dismissed, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts decided to reinstate them. According to the court, the university had failed to respond to Lodge’s misconduct, which had continued for a long time.

The agreement, filed with a court in Boston, provides for the creation of special compensation funds worth millions of dollars for the families of those affected.

The deans of Harvard Medical School and medical education, George Daly and Bernard Chang, said in a joint letter that Lodge’s actions were “morally reprehensible and contrary to the institution’s standards.”

As part of the agreement, the university will also establish an annual scholarship for medical students. The program will begin in the 2027-2028 academic year and will be dedicated to the memory of the people who donated their bodies for education and scientific research.

Harvard has said that the agreement brings the legal proceedings to a close, but stressed that the recovery of the affected families and the academic community will take a long time.
