France marks its National Day today, also known as Bastille Day. The date is associated with the start of the French Revolution and embodies the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity.
The French Ambassador to Kosovo, Olivier Guérot, highlighted the historical significance of 14 July, underlining French citizens’ special connection with the Republic and democracy.

According to him, 14 July has been France’s National Day since 1880, a century after the Bastille. He said that the establishment of the Republic and democracy is closely linked to the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity, which remain pillars of the identity of the French Republic.
Guérot explained that celebrations in France take place in three main stages. On 13 July, the traditional firefighters’ ball is held, while the military parade takes place on 14 July; in the evening, fireworks displays are held throughout France.
Turning to relations between France and Kosovo, the ambassador said that Paris has supported Kosovo since its earliest days.
France, according to Guérot, is a reliable ally and friend of Kosovo, providing continuous and supportive backing. He told RTK that France supported Kosovo’s independence and the establishment of the Kosovo state.
As part of current cooperation, he highlighted support for Kosovo’s economic development, including the possibility of France contributing to the organisation of the 2030 Mediterranean Games in Pristina.
The ambassador recalled that France hosted the Olympic Games in 2024, which, he said, were highly successful. He said France is ready to share its experience and offer concrete assistance so that the Mediterranean Games in Pristina can be a success, a major celebration and a positive image for Kosovo.
Guérot stressed that France’s goal is to expand cooperation with Kosovo in various sectors, with particular attention to culture and the economy.
He said he wants cooperation to grow in every field, comparing this desire to a child in a toy store who wants to have everything.
In cultural terms, Guérot said France pursues an active policy in Kosovo. It supports Kosovo’s film industry, film co-productions and the “Anibar” festival, while the ambassador also expressed satisfaction with the establishment of the French Institute of Kosovo.
He added that many people in Kosovo are learning French, while relations between the two countries are also strengthened by people-to-people contacts.
According to him, there is a strong human connection between the two countries, through a relatively large diaspora and family ties between French people and Kosovars.
Regarding the economy, Guérot mentioned French investments in Pristina Airport, as well as the presence in Kosovo of other companies with French capital.
