Gashi and Ambassador Schuebel discuss justice reforms and strengthening the rule of law

The chair of the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPC), Arian Gashi, and council member Visar Krasniqi met on Wednesday with Dirk Schuebel, ambassador of the European Union Office in Kosovo.

The discussion focused on reforms to the prosecutorial system, the rule of law, and the challenges and recommendations set out in the European Union’s Progress Report on Kosovo.

Gashi thanked Ambassador Schuebel for the EU Office’s continued support for Kosovo’s prosecutorial system, particularly in reform efforts and efforts to strengthen the rule of law.

During the meeting, the KPC chair presented the council’s work and priorities, emphasizing greater efficiency and better results from prosecutors’ offices, improved institutional performance and stronger accountability mechanisms, in line with the KPC’s legal mandate and powers.

Ambassador Schuebel expressed his willingness to continue supporting the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council. He also informed Gashi about a new project in the justice sector.

The two sides also reviewed the measures taken by the KPC to address the challenges and recommendations in the EU’s Progress Report on Kosovo.

The inclusion of the Serb community in the prosecutorial system was a separate topic. According to the KPC, both sides agreed that the integration process should continue in the future.

The KPC said it had undertaken a number of significant initiatives this year to consolidate and improve the prosecutorial system. These include the process of selecting the Chief State Prosecutor and developing the Electronic Information and Case Management System (SMIL), issues also mentioned in previous EU reports.

Gashi stressed that the concrete results, reforms and measures undertaken by the KPC this year should be fully and objectively reflected in the European Union’s next report on Kosovo.

In closing, representatives of the two institutions reaffirmed the importance of cooperation and partnership between the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council and the European Union Office in Kosovo. This cooperation aims to strengthen the rule of law, increase trust in justice institutions and support Kosovo’s European integration process.

At the end of the meeting, Arian Gashi presented Dirk Schuebel, ambassador of the EU Office in Kosovo, with a symbolic gift.
