Flames Engulf Lombardy as Wildfires Threaten Residential Areas and Two Canadair Aircraft Are Deployed

Wildfires continue to spread across forested areas in several parts of Lombardy, with the most serious situation reported in Como. More than 100 firefighters worked continuously throughout the night to contain the advancing flames and protect homes and infrastructure.

Efforts to extinguish the fires across Lombardy continued into the early hours of this morning.

In Como, which remains the most critical area, more than 100 firefighters worked throughout the night. They focused on preventing the fire from spreading, monitoring the highest-risk locations, and protecting residential buildings and infrastructure.

Firefighting teams from Liguria, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna have also joined the operation. Meanwhile, two Canadair aircraft from the state fleet were scheduled to begin aerial operations in the early morning hours.

The two aircraft will assist crews operating on the ground, with the aim of bringing the fires under control.

Italian Minister for Disabilities Alessandra Locatelli also responded to the situation in a Facebook post.

“We are following with concern what is happening in Como at this time: a terrifying fire has broken out on Mount Goi, engulfing woodland and vegetation and threatening people and buildings in the area,” Locatelli said.

The minister said that several residents were forced to leave their homes during the night.

“I want to thank the Fire Brigade, Civil Protection, the Regional Intervention Unit and all the other teams providing support,” the minister said.

Locatelli also thanked the volunteers involved both in efforts to extinguish the flames and in search-and-rescue operations.
