Flames Engulf Croatia, Leaving One Dead and Dozens Injured

Croatia is battling devastating wildfires that have left one person dead, dozens injured, and thousands of residents evacuated in recent hours.

Rescue teams discovered the body of a resident in the fire-hit region, while more than 40 people were rushed to hospital with burns and breathing difficulties.

Seven of those injured are in critical condition, while more than 1,200 residents have so far been evacuated from the two worst-affected areas, Lokva Rogoznica and Omis.

Hungary’s Foreign Ministry announced that a group of Hungarian tourists was among those evacuated. Four of them were injured and two required hospitalization.

Hundreds of firefighters and Canadair aircraft continue to battle the powerful flames along the Croatian coast, as the European Union’s meteorological service warns that weather conditions are expected to deteriorate further.

Forecasts indicate that the heat wave gripping Central and Eastern Europe, as well as southern Britain, Ireland, northern France, and southern Sweden, will continue until at least August 19.
