Fire at an abandoned warehouse in Trieste; bodies of a man and a woman found

A man and a woman died overnight after flames engulfed an abandoned warehouse in the Old Port of Trieste, in northeastern Italy.

The site of the fire serves as a temporary shelter for migrants who arrive in Trieste via the Balkan route.

After the fire was reported, several fire engines, police vehicles and emergency service vehicles arrived at the scene. Crews worked to bring the flames under control.

While extinguishing the fire, rescue crews found two charred bodies. The spread of the flames also caused part of the building’s attic to collapse.

The circumstances and cause of the fire have not yet been determined.
