Europe faces devastating fires, researchers warn of a new climatic period on the continent

The giant flames that have engulfed France and Spain are showing an increasingly worrying intensity, as specialists point out that Europe is entering an unusual phase of forest fires.

A rare phenomenon, called a “firestorm”, has been observed in the southwestern region of France. The colossal heat released by the burning creates powerful cloud masses, which can alter the fire’s behavior and make extinguishing it an even greater challenge.

Researchers emphasize that climate change has significantly contributed to the worsening of these fires this season. Extended periods without rainfall and extreme temperatures have turned vegetation into an extremely flammable fuel.

Approximately 290,000 hectares have been scorched on French territory, marking a historic record for the area burned in the country. Meanwhile, more than 300,000 residents in both countries have been forced to abandon their homes due to the threat of the flames.

President Emmanuel Macron has described the situation as one of the most severe fire emergencies in France’s history, calling it an unprecedented situation.

According to analysts, the continent is now experiencing fires that are more violent, spread faster, and behave more unpredictably. They warn that Europe is approaching an era where these extreme events could become a common occurrence.

“We are now in a time when fires are almost impossible to bring under control,” stated Víctor Resco de Dios, lecturer in forest engineering and global change at the University of Lleida in Spain.

How do “firestorms” form?

This process begins when an extremely powerful fire generates such intense heat that it rises rapidly into the sky and forms clouds similar to those of bad weather. These clouds can then cause powerful winds, electrical discharges, and further accelerate the spread of the fire front.

As they face several massive fires simultaneously, France and Spain have turned to European Union assistance mechanisms to cope with the situation.

Experts warn that the combination of record temperatures, prolonged drought, and the climate crisis could generate even more destructive fires in the future, as the effects of the current disaster may be felt for a long time.
