DUI demands resignation of Language Inspectorate director: Where is the mechanism that protects Albanian?

The Municipality of Skopje has severely violated the legal obligation to use the Albanian language within a single day, even twice in a row, according to accusations raised by DUI. Recalling that the capital has bilingual status, they underline that all its institutions are clearly obliged to use Albanian in official communications.

According to DUI, the Municipality of Skopje continues to disregard the Albanian language before public opinion, citizens’ reactions, and the law itself, displaying a contemptuous attitude towards legal norms, the Albanian community, and the multi-ethnic nature of the city.

“In these circumstances, the natural question arises: where is the Inspectorate for the Use of Languages? It was precisely established to record these violations, order their correction, and impose sanctions on institutions that avoid law enforcement. Its establishment required years of work, staff, training, and institutional resources. However, today it is paralyzed by a director appointed by VLEN, who remains silent in the face of open violations,” DUI’s response states.

The silence of this inspectorate, they further emphasize, is encouraging law-breaking and turning the exclusion of the Albanian language into a permanent institutional practice. DUI forcefully demands the immediate removal of the director of the Inspectorate for the Use of Languages; political accountability from VLEN, which has usurped and blocked the activity of this institution; and an immediate legal response against all those who violate the Law on the Use of Languages and incite ethnic division and hatred.
