At the 48th Protest, Martin Cani’s Family Tells Rama: Do Not Turn His Name into Propaganda, Institutions Killed Him

At the 48th protest held in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, the family of the late Martin Cani delivered a message to Prime Minister Edi Rama, opposing what they described as the use of their son’s name for political propaganda and the evasion of institutional responsibility.

Through a statement read during the gathering, the Cani family said that the real picture is entirely different from the one presented by the government. According to them, children continue to be killed, tragedies have not stopped, and institutions continue to fail.

The family stressed that the shutdown of TikTok has not stopped the killings of minors. The message said that social media is not the cause of young people being killed, while the problems are linked to a lack of education, responsibility and institutional accountability.

Referring to measures aimed at increasing safety in schools, the family stated that installing cameras does not solve the problem. They recalled that the prime minister has spoken about “smart city” systems in schools and the installation of cameras, saying that the algorithm does what the masses determine.

“The cameras did not save Martin and will not save other children,” was the family’s position. They asked Rama why he has not apologised for the failure of the system he leads and why he has not met with the family. According to them, so far they have seen only the exploitation of their tragedy.

The statement also raised the issue of a device for an injured heart, which is missing from the Trauma Hospital. The family demanded to know why the device has still not been purchased, even though, according to them, it costs less than a government car, stressing that lives are not saved by cameras.

There was also criticism of the prime minister’s reaction in Parliament. The family asked why Rama did not react or intervene when Minister Ogerta Manastirliu or Belinda Balluku laughed, questioning whether this was the respect shown for the tragedy.

In conclusion, the Cani family accused the police of failing to carry out their duty, since the murder weapon was found by a citizen. The statement said that the investigation would not have been “prodded” and that this constitutes evidence of the failure of law enforcement structures.
