Protest Reaches Its 48th Day as Citizens Return to the Square: No Negotiations, Rama Must Resign

For the 48th consecutive day, citizens will protest today against the government and the entire political class. The afternoon rally is expected to begin in Skanderbeg Square, from where participants will march toward the Prime Minister’s Office, demonstrating that the unrest that began several weeks ago will continue.

On the eve of the next protest, organizers called on citizens to take part in the largest possible numbers. They stressed that the fundamental demand has not changed: Prime Minister Edi Rama must resign, and the political caste, which they say has held the country hostage for more than three decades, must leave.

The movement’s position was also clearly expressed during the 47th day of the protest. Organizer Edison Lika said there would be no negotiations and that no one would be allowed to assume its political representation.

According to Lika, the movement’s demands have been set, and for that reason there will be no negotiations with anyone. He stressed that the first point of the protest is Rama’s resignation.

During yesterday’s rally, activists also opposed efforts which, they said, seek to create the impression that a process of reflection has begun within the ruling majority. They stated that citizens will not be satisfied with superficial changes or with replacing names in the government lineup.

The presence of students wearing graduation gowns was one of the most significant moments of the protest. Through the message, “We will stay, we will not leave,” they stressed that Albania cannot build its future without its youth.

Meanwhile, activist Sidorela Vatnikaj called for investigations not to be limited solely to former officials, but to reach the highest levels of government leadership.

She called for Edi Rama to be investigated as the leader of a criminal organization, rather than in his capacity as Prime Minister of Albania.

Placards carrying ironic and satirical messages against the government, the opposition and the entire political class also stood out at the protest. Participants repeated the chants that have now become symbols of the movement: “Albania demands a revolution,” “New Albania,” “Your time is up,” “We will not stop until you resign,” “Rama, resign,” “Parliament of crime,” and “Rama SPAK you!”

After 47 consecutive days in the square, organizers say rallies will be held every day. They invited citizens to join today’s 48th protest, insisting that the movement will continue until the protesters’ demands are met.
