The UK Supreme Court has agreed to hear Albania’s appeal against a ruling concerning the extradition of individuals suspected of involvement in organizing and carrying out the murder of businessman Ardian Nikulaj, which took place in Lezhë in 2023.

Among those whose extradition is being sought is Edmond Haxhia, who is suspected of organizing and commissioning the assassination. The list also includes four British nationals—Harry Simpson, Thomas Mithan, Steven Hunt and Harriet Bridgeman—who are suspected of surveilling the target before the killing.
The same case also includes Portuguese national Ruben Saraiva, who is accused of killing Nikulaj. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Lezhë Court for the crime.
After establishing the suspects’ identities, the Albanian authorities asked the United Kingdom to surrender them for prosecution on charges of “murder motivated by blood feud” and “illegal manufacture and possession of firearms and ammunition.”
Albania’s requests were certified by the UK Home Secretary. However, a procedural issue arose during the proceedings regarding the charge on which the extradition was based. At the conclusion of the hearing, the request was treated as having been made for “premeditated murder” rather than “murder motivated by blood feud.”
The District Court ruled that the case should be referred to the Home Secretary, who would make the final decision on extradition. The Home Secretary subsequently ordered that the suspects be sent to Albania.
The suspects appealed the decision, arguing that the proceedings had been conducted on an incorrect basis because of the discrepancy between Albania’s initial requests and the extradition orders subsequently issued. The UK High Court accepted their arguments and overturned the extradition orders.
Following that ruling, the Albanian state and the UK Home Secretary appealed to the UK Supreme Court.
After a preliminary assessment, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the appeal and listed the case for consideration. Its forthcoming ruling will determine whether the proceedings conducted to date are sufficient for the suspects’ extradition to Albania to proceed.
