The shooting death of a 26-year-old man by an agent of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of Maine has sparked widespread debate in the United States, once again raising questions about how immigration enforcement operations are carried out.
The incident occurred on Monday in Biddeford, a city with around 22,000 residents. It came just one week after another ICE agent killed a Mexican man in Texas, adding to dissatisfaction with the immigration policies of President Donald Trump’s administration.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described the victim as an “illegal immigrant” who had been issued a final deportation order. According to authorities, during a planned operation, the young man attempted to evade police control by using his vehicle.
The DHS statement said the agent used his service weapon because of what it said was a threat to public safety. The young man was wounded in the shooting and later died from his injuries.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office also said that the victim attempted to drive away in a car which, according to preliminary investigations, was moving toward the officer who opened fire. The agent has been temporarily removed from duty, in line with standard procedure in cases where an officer is involved in an incident resulting in casualties. Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident.
Local organizations defending immigrants’ rights have challenged the official narrative. The Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition and Presente Maine identified the deceased as a 26-year-old of Colombian origin, stating that he held valid authorization to live and work in the United States.
“The discrepancy between what the authorities claim and reality must be investigated. We will not allow this death to become merely a statistic,” the head of Presente Maine said.
Witness Daniel Butcher told AFP that he was at home when he heard the gunshots. According to him, he saw a small vehicle collide with a white SUV and, shortly afterward, an ICE agent pulled the driver from the car and threw him to the ground.
“As soon as I saw his face, it was covered in blood. It was a terrible sight. I heard him say, ‘I was trying to stop,’ and a few seconds later he was no longer moving,” the witness said.
The case has also prompted reactions in the political arena. Maine Senator Angus King said authorities had initially informed him that there was an arrest warrant against the victim on immigration-related grounds. He later received different information, according to which the 26-year-old was not the primary target of the operation.
For this reason, King called for a “full, transparent and independent” investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident.
Following the shooting, police established a security perimeter in the area. Meanwhile, dozens of protesters took to the streets of Biddeford carrying signs reading “ICE Out!” and demanding accountability for the young man’s death.
Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain expressed condolences to the victim’s family and called for the case to be fully clarified.
“A person lost his life, and his family, as well as our community, deserve to know exactly what happened. I understand the fear and uncertainty this event has caused among the city’s residents,” he said.
ICE agents, tasked with enforcing the Trump administration’s mass deportation policy, have repeatedly faced criticism over their use of force and the way their operations are organized. The death of the 26-year-old in Maine is expected to further intensify the debate in the United States over the role and powers of the federal immigration agency.
