18-year-old hits 84-year-old in Britain, goes home to eat pizza, sentenced to three years in prison

An 18-year-old man in Britain has been sentenced to three years in prison after hitting an 84-year-old pedestrian with his vehicle, seriously injuring him and leaving without providing assistance.

The ruling was handed down by Durham Crown Court, which found Sonny Horsfall guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. The court also banned him from driving for four years.

The incident occurred on the evening of April 22 in Redcar, North Yorkshire. According to the investigation, Horsfall lost control of a recently purchased Audi A4, mounted the pavement and struck 84-year-old Eddie, who was on his way home.

Security cameras captured the moment the car left the road and hit the pedestrian, while the driver immediately fled the scene. Prosecutors stressed that the 18-year-old did not have a driving licence, had been disqualified from driving, and that the vehicle was uninsured.

During the investigation, footage was also found on the young man’s phone showing him driving at high speed, carrying out dangerous overtaking manoeuvres and running red lights.

In one recording, he can be heard saying: “I just bought this beast,” while in another video he says: “To hell with the red light.”

Two hours after the accident, Horsfall sent voice messages to his friends on Snapchat. In one of them, he said: “I don’t know what I hit… I’m eating pizza,” while in another he admitted that he thought he may have seriously injured or killed someone.

As a result of the impact, the 84-year-old suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis, back and right leg. He spent several days in intensive care and, despite undergoing surgery, continues to face major difficulties with mobility, uses walking aids and suffers from constant pain.
