Authorities have ordered the evacuation of around 5,600 homes in Berlin after a 100-kilogram World War II bomb was discovered at the bottom of a city canal.
None found
The unexploded munition was found this morning in the Neukölln district, near the Zonenallee shopping area. Police said the bomb had been removed from the water and temporarily placed on a floating platform.
Police have established a safety perimeter with a radius of approximately 500 meters around the site where the bomb was found. The area covered by the evacuation includes a nursing home, a homeless shelter and a day-care center. Special temporary accommodation has been provided for residents who have left their homes.
A specialized crane is being prepared to move the bomb toward the shore. Explosive ordnance disposal experts will then carry out the necessary procedures to neutralize it.
Authorities expect the operation to continue for several hours and have urged residents to follow safety instructions and stay out of the evacuated perimeter.
