Young protesters confront police over injuries at demonstrations: “You chose disgrace; not even the Greeks or Serbs have done this to us

The 13th student protest in Tirana was marked by tension as demonstrators confronted State Police officers and accused them of using violence against protesters in recent days.

Protesters voiced anger over injuries suffered by several young people during police interventions and criticized the use of force against citizens.

One protester also referred to the €2,500 bonus promised by Prime Minister Edi Rama. He accused the officers of siding with the government instead of protecting citizens.

“You chose the side of disgrace and €2,500. Shame on you! Not even in Greek, Serbian or Macedonian stadiums have they done to us what you have done to these young people,” the protester told the officers. He added: “I hope there are no deaths.”

Serious incidents have occurred during protests in recent days, and several participants have been injured during interventions by law enforcement officers.

The case of Erjon Vishkulli, 28, has prompted widespread reaction. He was seriously injured in the eye by a rubber bullet during the October 24 protest. He has traveled to Italy for specialist treatment in the hope of saving his sight.

Prime Minister Rama has announced plans to change the law, with tougher measures for people who commit acts of violence during protests. Students and activists have opposed the proposals.

The protest against the government continues in the capital. Verbal clashes between demonstrators and police reflect rising tensions following recent events.
