A tragic incident occurred today in Pogradec, where a 37-year-old woman who was seven months pregnant lost her life. She was Marjana Karolina Bunaj, who died while being transported to Tirana for specialized medical treatment.

The deceased woman’s sister, Albina Mekolli, who accompanied Marjana throughout her stay at the maternity hospital, tearfully recounted the difficult moments that preceded her death.

She said everything began when the 37-year-old called her sister because she was suffering from severe abdominal pain.

“She called me at 12 o’clock and said: ‘Come, because I have severe abdominal pain.’ I went very quickly because we live nearby. I took her to the maternity hospital because she was pregnant. The doctor on duty examined her, performed an ultrasound and said that she had internal bleeding. She said we had to take her directly to Tirana.

I heard them saying that a helicopter had to come. Then she said, ‘There is nothing I can do for her here; we have to take her as soon as possible.’

Then the resuscitation doctors from Pogradec Hospital arrived. She kept saying that we had to take her as quickly as possible. They took her to the intensive care unit, and there were further delays there as well. At 4 a.m., they set off by ambulance, and she was in pain the entire time,” her sister recounted.

According to the 37-year-old’s sister, the delays in setting off for Tirana amounted to a loss of valuable time.

“I kept telling them to take her as quickly as possible, then they called a nurse. We got the ambulance and set off for Tirana. I think my sister would have survived if we had left for Tirana half an hour earlier,” she said, appealing for justice so that the truth can come to light.

According to the family, the 37-year-old’s husband had left for the United States of America just three days before the incident, with the aim of bringing the family together.
