The latest decision by the Special Court in The Hague regarding former KLA leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi has revived a television interview previously given by former LDK MP Adem Salihaj. In that material, he spoke about political assassinations in the post-war period and directly accused former heads of political and security structures.

Salihaj singled out the figures of Hashim Thaçi and Kadri Veseli in particular, stressing that if these two people had the genuine will, all political murders could be cleared up within a very short time, “Bota sot” reports.

“There is no logic in the fact that out of so many cases not even one has been solved. The reason is that those who ordered them enjoyed such great power in the post-conflict period that they completely controlled the police, the courts and the prosecution. The only explanation lies in the fact that they were protecting them. Otherwise, if Hashim Thaçi and Kadri Veseli had wanted it, these cases would have been solved in two or three days. I am one hundred percent sure of this,” he said at the time.

The former MP also pointed to the control that the structures of the time exercised over the justice and security system, linking this to the failure to solve most of the post-war political murders.

Salihaj also mentioned a NATO report, which he claimed showed that he himself was the target of an assassination organized by the Kosovo Information Service (SHIK).

“There is an official NATO report that proves I was the target of an assassination attempt by SHIK. Whoever carried out these crimes, by logic, would have been discovered long ago. It makes no sense that all these political activists, who were not Serbia’s people, were killed and almost no case has been clarified,” Salihaj was quoted as saying, “Bota sot” reports.

The resurfacing of these statements, after the latest developments in The Hague, has reopened public reflection on post-war political murders, possible responsibilities and the reasons why these issues have not been clarified.
