US Temporarily Halts Avocado Imports from Mexico Following Arrest of Criminal Group Leaders

Avocado imports from the Mexican state of Michoacán have been suspended by the United States over security concerns. The state is the largest exporter of the product to the US market.

The Association of Avocado Producers and Packers of Mexico (APEAM) confirmed the decision, explaining that no avocado shipments are currently authorized for export to the United States.

The Michoacán government described the halt in shipments as a preventive measure taken following the arrest of several leaders of organized crime groups active in the area.

At the same time, the US Embassy in Mexico announced that it had suspended all activities in Michoacán following a threat to US interests.

Before the product is exported to the United States, US authorities conduct checks and inspections at Mexican facilities where the avocados are packed.

A similar measure has been implemented before. In 2024, avocado exports from Michoacán were temporarily halted after two US inspectors were attacked in the state.

Michoacán is Mexico’s leading avocado-producing region and the most important source of supply for the US market. The suspension could therefore affect the supply chain and avocado prices in the United States.
