US Prepares New Sanctions Against Iran as Pakistani Army Chief Arrives in Tehran After Talks With Trump

Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran this morning on a mediation mission. The visit comes as the United States prepares to launch what it has described as “the largest financial attack ever” against Iran’s trading partners.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned of severe measures against Iran, a country that has faced economic sanctions almost continuously since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The new sanctions package is expected to be unveiled today at a press conference scheduled for 13:00.

In an article published on Sunday in the Financial Times, Bessent stated: “At dawn, ‘Economic Day’ begins, the largest financial attack ever launched against an adversary.”

Authorities in Tehran have rejected the US threats, declaring that they will block all oil exports from the Persian Gulf “if the economic war continues.” Iran also issued a new maritime navigation warning, according to which no vessel should pass through the Strait of Hormuz without its authorization.

According to Iranian media, Munir, who has developed a personal relationship with US President Donald Trump, travelled to Iran for talks with people close to Mojtaba Khamenei.

Pakistan said his trip was linked to efforts “to promote regional peace and stability.” A Pakistani source said Munir was expected to meet figures close to Iran’s top leadership. Meanwhile, sources cited by Reuters reported that the Pakistani marshal had contacted the US president before travelling to Tehran.

Tehran also announced that Oman’s foreign minister will visit Iran on Tuesday for talks related to the Strait of Hormuz.
