Bessent Warns of Economic Offensive Against Iran: US Threatens Measures Against Countries Doing Business with Tehran

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the United States is entering the “endgame” for a sweeping economic offensive against Iran.

In an article published by the “Financial Times,” Bessent warned of an approaching “economic D-Day” for Tehran, calling it “the largest financial offensive” ever undertaken against an adversary.

Washington’s objective, according to him, is to shut down the economic channels that support the Iranian regime and leave Tehran without external financing.

The American secretary’s warning is also directed at states and companies that continue to cooperate with Iran. He accused “Iran’s enablers” of buying and transporting Iranian oil, facilitating fuel transfers through maritime routes, and allowing the use of their banks for transactions the US considers illegal. The “consequences” for continuing this cooperation could be included in measures the Trump administration may announce.

Bessent’s stance was made public just days after President Donald Trump warned of an “economic D-Day” against Iran. Trump has stated that countries continuing to do business with Tehran will face “extraordinary economic consequences.”

The US administration is aiming to increase economic pressure on Iran, with the goal of forcing Tehran to return to the negotiating table.

Bessent also sent a direct message to Iran, saying that if Tehran chooses to respond militarily to American economic measures, Trump will react “quickly and decisively.”
