US on alert after warning from Israel: Tehran suspected of plot against Donald Trump

Israel has passed on new intelligence to the United States which, according to sources familiar with the matter, points to an Iranian plot to assassinate President Donald Trump.

According to The Wall Street Journal, this development represents another rise in tensions in the standoff between Washington and Tehran.

The American newspaper notes that for years Iran has publicly declared that it seeks revenge against Trump for the killing of Qassem Soleimani, a senior general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, during his first presidential term.

The White House chief himself acknowledged the possibility of such a scenario, while also suggesting that the current leaders of the ayatollah regime could meet the same fate as those who came before them if they insist on escalating the confrontation.

“Their leaders disappeared. Then they chose other leaders. They disappeared too. Now they have another group of leaders. They could disappear as well, who knows. And you know what? I also may no longer be around, because I am their number one target. I am number one on their assassination list,” Trump said.

In recent weeks, relations between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have cooled because of differences over the continuation of the war with Iran. Netanyahu has defended the idea of continuing strikes against Iran and achieving other military objectives.

For his part, Trump has sought a way out of the conflict, expressing concern that the confrontation could cause shocks to the global economy.

The office of the Israeli prime minister said Trump and Netanyahu held a phone call a day earlier, during which they agreed to continue “coordination between the two countries.”

The same statement said Trump informed Netanyahu about the latest activities of the United States in the Persian Gulf.
