US awards nearly $3 million in compensation to those affected by “Havana Syndrome” as the neurological mystery remains unsolved

Nearly $3 million in compensation has been distributed by the United States government to American employees affected by the so-called “Havana Syndrome,” a mysterious neurological condition that for years has afflicted spies, diplomats, and their family members.

These are the first official payments granted to US service employees in connection with the syndrome, which was first reported about a decade ago by CIA officers stationed in Havana, the capital of Cuba.

Similar episodes were later reported by diplomats and American employees in other countries, including China, who described unusual incidents that affected their health.

Those affected have reported symptoms such as strange sounds in their ears, clicking, whistling, intense pressure in the head, dizziness, nausea, and other neurological disturbances.

For many years, “Havana Syndrome” has been accompanied by widespread speculation. Some hypotheses raised the possibility that the symptoms were caused by exposure to microwaves or by the use of an advanced directed-energy weapon, fueling suspicions of a foreign power’s involvement in attacks against American personnel outside US territory.

However, an assessment published last year by most US intelligence agencies concluded that it is “very unlikely” that the reported injuries were caused by a foreign state through the use of an innovative weapon or a prototype device.

Although the exact source of the syndrome remains unclear, the decision by US authorities to compensate those affected represents an official acknowledgment of the serious health consequences these employees reported during their service abroad.
