University of Prishtina to open admissions for new students on Monday for the 2026/2027 academic year

The University of Prishtina will open its call on Monday for the enrollment of new students for the 2026/2027 academic year. More than 5,600 study places will be available at the bachelor’s level, while the institution has also announced new measures to include students from the diaspora.

On June 29, the University of Prishtina will begin accepting applications for new students at the bachelor’s level. As the largest public higher education institution in Kosovo, it will offer more than five thousand study places across dozens of academic programs. According to university officials, this year’s offer has been designed in line with labor market demands and the latest quality standards in higher education.

“At this level of study, we will admit 5,663 students in a broad offer of various programs across all three levels. UP offers 146 programs from all fields, from all profiles; these are all revised and reaccredited programs based on the new standards of the Accreditation Agency, as well as on labor market analysis. Some of them are going this year for accreditation and other programs for reaccreditation, according to the findings we have had from several analyses, and in this way the needs of young people according to their various affinities are met, as well as the needs of the labor market in Kosovo,” said Majlinda Gjelaj, Vice Rector for Institutional Development, Quality and Student Affairs.

A new feature this year is the allocation of four percent of study places for certain categories of applicants from outside Kosovo. These quotas include the Albanian diaspora, the Arbëresh of Italy, the Arbnesh of Zadar, and Albanians of Kosovo origin living abroad.

“Within these programs, in the call we will open, it is envisaged that some special quotas will also be allocated for students, which was not the practice in the past, but for the first time we have allocated 4 percent of the total number of students we admit, with 1 percent set aside for the Arbëresh of Italy and those of Zadar, for Albanians of Kosovo origin living in Albania, and for our diaspora wherever they live around the world, 2 percent for them. Specifically, in numbers, 112 candidates will be admitted from the diaspora in different programs, 62 of them will be from Turkey, 64 from the Arbëresh of Zadar and Italy,” said Majlinda Gjelaj, Vice Rector for Institutional Development, Quality and Student Affairs.

Meanwhile, the university aims to enroll around 2,600 students at the Master’s level. Officials say that in some programs quotas have been reduced in order to improve the quality of teaching, practical work and scientific research.

“In Master’s programs we will enroll somewhere around 2,600 students. All programs have also been revised and reaccredited. We have requested smaller quotas at the Master’s level because of the increase in the quality of learning and teaching, in smaller groups for practical work and scientific research and better management, but also because of the quality standard under which the ratio between the number of professors and students has been significantly reduced, as our request and also according to European standards for quality in higher education. Now, in general, we have a very satisfactory ratio that compares with all quality universities in the world, 1 to 23; that means that in the past one professor was burdened with 100 students, which was an extraordinary number for one professor to carry while still being able to maintain quality in teaching, whereas now this quota has changed and the ratio is 1 to 23,” said Majlinda Gjelaj, Vice Rector for Institutional Development, Quality and Student Affairs.

The University of Prishtina will continue to offer tuition-free studies for students, while those who achieve high academic results will be supported through scholarship schemes.
