U.S.-Canada trade clash escalates, Trump blocks imports of alcohol and motorcycles

The economic clash between the United States and Canada has taken on a new dimension after the administration of President Donald Trump imposed new restrictions on a number of Canadian products. The list includes alcohol, dairy products, motorcycles and other goods.

The decisions were approved through several executive orders and are expected to take effect on September 29. According to the White House, Canada is treating American products in a discriminatory manner by imposing restrictions on them that are not applied in the same way to goods from other countries.

The ban on imports into the U.S. market will affect certain dairy products, sugarcane molasses, non-alcoholic beer, malt beer, as well as certain categories of wine, rum and vodka. The measures also include motorcycles and mopeds.

Meanwhile, higher import tariffs have been planned for other categories of goods. These include certain types of cheese, hides and raw skins, paper, various types of furniture and mattresses, aluminum and iron, motorboats, golf carts, parts for fishing equipment and power plants.

The steps taken by Washington follow the retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada on American goods. Ottawa’s measures, which affected steel, clothing and furniture, came into force after midnight.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that separating the country from the United States as its main trading partner would have costly consequences. However, he stressed that failing to take action would come at an even higher price.

The Canadian economy is significantly exposed to the clash, as more than two-thirds of its exports are destined for the United States. At the same time, Canada remains the U.S.’s second-largest trading partner after Mexico, highlighting the strong economic interdependence between the two countries.

Companies on both sides of the border have raised concerns about the effects of the trade conflict. They say the new tariffs and bans could make products more expensive and lead to a decline in the number of buyers.

Trade expert Deborah Elms estimated that the measures could hit Canadian businesses that rely on American consumers particularly hard. However, initial estimates indicate that the value of the goods affected by the bans amounts to around $1 billion.

The conflict risks spreading to other sectors as well. President Trump has warned Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier that it will no longer be able to sell its products in the U.S. unless it moves production to American territory.

In Canada, meanwhile, a boycott of American products has been under way for several months, with alcohol among the main targets. Some stores have removed these products from their shelves, while consumers have turned to domestic alternatives.

The United States and Canada have maintained close allied relations and important economic ties for decades. But the latest trade talks ended without results at the end of August, and no new round of negotiations has been scheduled so far.

As the new restrictions and tariffs take effect, pressure is mounting on the governments of both countries to reach an agreement. The consequences of the clash are expected to affect both businesses and consumers in the U.S. and Canada.
