Two failed injections during Christa Pike’s execution, doctor warns of burns and severe injuries

Christa Pike’s execution in Tennessee was halted after two attempts to administer the lethal injection failed. Following the procedure, the 50-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Throughout the process, Pike remained strapped to a stretcher. Witnesses said she moved and writhed after the injections failed.

Joel Zivot, an associate professor of anesthesiology and surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, as well as an opponent of the death penalty, said the complications that emerged were foreseeable.

According to him, one possibility is that the intravenous catheter was inserted incorrectly. In that case, the pentobarbital would not have entered the bloodstream but would instead have spread into the tissue surrounding the arm.

Zivot explained that such a situation could cause extensive burns to one or both arms, making prolonged treatment and potentially specialized skin procedures necessary.

Randy Spivey, Pike’s attorney, confirmed that burn marks and blisters were observed at the injection sites.

The doctor also warned of other serious consequences, including possible heart damage. However, Pike’s exact condition and ultimate prognosis have not yet been determined.

“Christa is alive, but we still do not have a clear assessment of her prognosis or any significant update on her medical condition,” attorney Spivey said.

Zivot added that if the injuries proved so severe that Pike could not recover to a certain level of health, this could also affect the possibility of carrying out a second execution. The decision will depend on her condition and the positions of the authorities and courts.

Christa Pike was sentenced to death for the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, committed on January 12, 1995, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Pike was 18 at the time of the crime.

Prosecutors have said that Pike and her boyfriend at the time, Tadaryl Shipp, planned the attack on Slemmer. The victim was lured to a wooded area, where she was struck with a box cutter and a large piece of asphalt. Shipp also carved a pentagram into her body.

Shipp was 17 when the crime occurred and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Pike has not denied her involvement in the murder, but has said that at the time she was an 18-year-old suffering from mental health problems.

Her case is another problematic execution in Tennessee. In May, the procedure involving death-row inmate Tony Carruthers was halted after authorities failed to secure the necessary intravenous access.

Christa Pike remains in hospital in critical condition and under medical care.
